OVER THE WEEKEND, Rita Ora made a comeback with a eagerly anticipated collaboration with Cardi B, Bebe Rexha and Charli XCX. The song was called ‘Girls’, and it was the first time Rita Ora publicly expressed the fact that she is attracted to women.
Some people were unimpressed with the song, which featured the lyrics:
Sometimes I just wanna kiss girls, girls, girls / Red wine, I just wanna kiss girls, girls, girls.
People felt this was reminiscent of Katy Perry’s trivialization of same-sex relationships between women way back in “I Kissed A Girl”. (“It’s not what good girls do.”) Pop singer Hayley Kiyoko,who identifies as a lesbian, was very vocal about her disapproval of Rita’s new tune.
I don’t need to drink wine to kiss girls; I’ve loved women my entire life. This type of message is dangerous because it completely belittles and invalidates the very pure feelings of an entire community.
Kiyoko was joined by Kehlani, who said “There. were. harmful. lyrics. period.”
The criticism prompted an apology from Rita Ora.
Hello everyone reading this. Girls was written to represent my truth and is an accurate account of a very real and honest experience in my life. I have had romantic relationships with women and men throughout my life and this is my personal journey.

Rita then continued her statement with an apology, which should not have been necessary.
I am sorry how I expressed myself, if my song has hurt anyone. I would never intentionally cause harm to other LGBTQ+ people or anyone else. Looking forward, I hope that continuing to express myself through my art will empower my fans to feel as proud of themselves as I’m learning to feel about who I am.
I’m ever thankful for my fans for teaching me to love myself no matter what. I have strived to be a contributor to the LGBTQ+ community throughout my entire career and always will be. Love, Rita.

I will die on this hill - it’s a tedious and reactionary demand to know someone’s entire life story before you let them make art. Even when the alternative feels tempting or frustrating.
If you think you’re bisexual, you can still be bisexual even if you’ve never kissed someone of the opposite sex.
You can even be bisexual if you’ve only ever kissed a member of the same sex while you were drunk.
Every single person’s experience is different, and it’s not normal to be suspicious of every bisexual person until they provide receipts. In fact, it’s just biphobic, really.
